The Town of Marana was incorporated in 1977 a boasts a richly diverse cultural and economic heritage. As one of the longest continuously occupied areas in Arizona, many peoples and industries have called Marana home in a history spanning hundreds of years.
Marana lies just northwest of the City of Tucson and is known for its stunning environments, ranging from the pristine Tortolita Mountains to active agricultural lands in the northern part of town.
Marana’s population of nearly 35,000 residents, median age 37.4 years, is ethnically and economically diverse. As one of the fastest growing cities in Arizona, Marana continues to develop new opportunities for residents to live, work and recreate while enjoying the beauty of the Sonoran Desert.
Marana is bisected by both the Interstate 10 and the Union Pacific Railroad. Both of these transportation systems are important to the growth and economic development of Marana's business community. Aviation is also important to the community, with the Marana Regional Airport and nearby Pinal Airpark serving industry and general aviation needs.
Marana's population is well educated, with an estimated 90.3 percent of its population having completed high school education or higher and 29.1 percent holding a bachelor's degree or higher. The Town of Marana's economic base includes agriculture, construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation, and information systems.
Major industry employers in and around Marana include Sargent Controls & Aerospace, FLSmidth Krebs, Tusonix, Lasertel, Coca-Cola, Johns Manville, CalPortland, and Comcast, among many others. Marana is also home to the PGA TOUR WGC Accenture Match Play golf tournament, played each February at the new Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain resort.
The Town of Marana has invested heavily in its future through sound strategic planning. The Marana Strategic Plan, completed in February 2009, outlines the community’s key focus areas as Commerce, Community Building, Progress & Innovation, Heritage, and Recreation. The Town is also nearing completion of its Marana Economic Roadmap, a strategic planning process to guide the community’s future economic development efforts.
