City of Tucson |
|
The City of Tucson was incorporated in 1877 and has become the second-largest city in the State of Arizona.
It has grown to approximately 226 square miles within a greater metropolitan region of 412 square miles. More than 300 years after its founding as a mission site and outpost for Spain, the Old Pueblo retains much of its original vitality and has increased in cultural richness.
Population projections show that the City of Tucson is expected to grow from a Census 2000 population of 486,699 to 553,150 in 2008, assuming the city continues to annex land. The current population of the City of Tucson is estimated at 538,050 people.
The Tucson City Manager's Office is responsible for carrying out the direction of the mayor and council through the administration and coordination of city staff. An important tool for both the manager and council is the City Strategic Plan, a working document used by the major and council and city staff to prioritize the needs of the Tucson community.
The city's financial sustainability process ensures that necessary service levels and resources are identified and matched up in critical growth areas such as police, fire, parks and recreation, and transportation to provide effective and efficient services to its citizens.
