Education is a high priority in Pima County. The region's educational system reflects the community's diversity, offering programs at all levels that meet the needs of both student and employer.

Primary and secondary educational programs are designed to include the special needs of students in areas such as gifted, honors, bilingual, vocational, and mentally/physically challenged.

Pima County has 229
public schools in 18 districts with more than 151,000 students (2006-2007 enrollment figures from the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent). There are 84 charter schools offering a range of coursework to both elementary and secondary students. There are also more than 50 private, self-regulating elementary and secondary schools in the Tucson region.

The
University of Arizona is a student-centered premier research university, with high-ranking schools of business and pharmacy, Eller College of Management and the College of Pharmacy, respectively. As part of its efforts to engage students in math and science, Raytheon Missile Systems partnered with the University of Arizona College of Education and Tucson Values Teachers to launch a unique internship program. Ten high school math and science teachers worked at the company over the summer. The objective was to create stronger bonds between the classroom and the workplace by giving them hands-on work experience to take back to their classrooms. Young workforce entrants have a solid educational foundation. The Tucson region has a healthy high school graduation rate and growing college enrollment statistics. About a third of adults in the workforce 25 years and older have continued their education at the collegiate level.
