Tucson has established many vital international partnerships. For example, a location near the border means Tucson has excellent access to the growing Mexican market. The State of Arizona has strong business, social, and political ties with the neighboring Mexican state of Sonora and, farther to the south, with the state of Sinaloa.

The North American Free Trade Act has already resulted in increased trade with Mexico. This trend promises to continue and expand business opportunities on both sides of the border. Recently, Tucson became a U.S. headquarters for La CosteƱa/Arizona Canning Co. LLC, a leading Mexican manufacturer of canned and preserved foods. The new Tucson plant will use U.S. suppliers to produce canned foods for the American market. This is just one example of Tucson's relevance to the exploding U.S. Hispanic market.

While Tucson has always had an international business presence, trade with other countries has increased dramatically in the last decade. New markets are being developed in Europe and Asia and on the North American continent. Exports to Canada continue to rise as well, and in 2004 Canada opened a Trade Office in Tucson.

Tucson is strategically located to benefit from the deep-water ports located on the western coasts of the United States and Mexico. These facilities provide Tucson with access to global shipping destinations.

Union Pacific considers Tucson to be one of its heaviest-traveled rail lines in the country. Located on the main line in the Century Park Research Center is the
Port of Tucson. The Port of Tucson is a distribution and loading facility that provides convenient access for trade.

Total Arizona exports, 2010:
Just over $15.5 billion.
